FAQ:
What if I am already a PMP, do I still have to take the 3-day PMP Exam Prep course?
If you received your PMP designation prior to September 4th 2010, you do not have to take the 3-day PMP Exam Prep.
What if I have already taken a project management course from another organization which is of similar scope to one of one of the certificate level courses?
A Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) exemption may be granted for a maximum of one course.
I attended an in-house PM Essentials workshop two years ago. Can I apply this course towards the U of T Certificate in Applied Project Management?
Yes. If at some earlier time you attended any of the courses which are now part of the U of T Certificate in Applied Project Management, upon proof of attendance, you will receive full credit for those courses. This includes courses such as PM Essentials (a.k.a. PM Applied Tools and Techniques), Hands-on Microsoft Project, and Taking Charge of Multiple Projects (a.k.a. Juggling Multiple Projects) WCP has provided in-house (including through Procept prior to October 2009) and publicly to clients for 15 years. Courses by the same name that are not WCP courses do not qualify. If you are not sure if a course you have attended applies, please call 905-660-7184 or email info@wcpconsulting.com
What makes the Certificate in Applied Project Management different from other University level PM Certificates?
The U of T certificate in Applied Project Management is made up of 8 courses carefully chosen to provide project managers with credentials and skills needed to successfully take on projects of all sizes. Included in the certificate is training on effective use of Microsoft Project, managing multiple projects, managing stakeholder expectations, advanced people skills, and tools for ensuring project requirements are understood so that project deliverables are aligned with business needs while stakeholder expectations are effectively managed. As a bonus, while earning your U of T Certificate in Applied PM, you are also preparing for your PMP designation. This enables you to achieve two highly recognized project management credentials at the same time. After taking the Project Management Essentials - Part 1, the remaining certificate courses can be taken in any order. This allows you to obtain the specific skills training you need when you need it most - according to your priorities.
How large are the class sizes?
While other organizations put as many as 40 participants in a lecture hall with theatre style seating and use break-out rooms for group exercises, we believe in smaller class sizes with no more than 24 participants. Not only does this allow the facilitator to give more attention to each participant, but it also allows us to conduct our workshops in a less formal environment. Instead participants sitting in a theatre style lecture hall, participants in our workshops sit at tables. This style set-up, together with our smaller class sizes, means that rather than having to use break-out rooms for discussions and group exercises, all of our group discussions and exercises take place within the main class room. As a result, the course facilitator does not have to divide their time between multiple breakout rooms, is able take up of group exercises with the entire group present in the same room, and participants do not waist valuable class time shuffling in and out of the main room whenever there is an exercise.
If I have my PMP designation, why would I want a U of T Certificate in Applied Project Management?
The PMP designation is recognized around the world as the leading professional designation for project managers. A PMP designation demonstrates a level of exposure to project management, and an understanding of certain key concepts contained within the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge). Many organizations will not even consider hiring a project manager without a PMP designation, and therefore the designation is becoming a requirement for career project managers. Being an effective project manager on the job, however, requires skills that are simply not part of the PMP requirements.
The U of T Certificate in Applied Project Management is one of the most effective means for obtaining the knowledge required to pass the PMP exam, and the skills necessary to be an effective project manager. As a bonus, certificate courses taken after you have obtained your PMP designation count towards the 60 PDUs required every three year period to maintain your designation. Qualifying participants are therefore encouraged to take the PMP Exam Prep course as early in the program as possible. A PMP designation together with a Certificate in Applied Project Management is therefore an unbeatable combination that sets you apart from the many other PMPs out there.
Note: if you are a PMP prior to September 4th 2010, you will not be required to take the PMP Exam Prep course as part of the certificate requirements. After September 4th, 2010, exemptions for PMPs from the PMP Exam Prep course are at the discretion of U of T.
Can I take some of these courses now, and decide later whether or not I want to take the whole certificate?
Yes! Each of the courses included in the certificate may be taken as a stand-alone course. You do not have to indicate that you are taking the courses as part of the certificate. Once all the certificate requirements have been met, within 3 years of attending your first Certificate course, you simply notify the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies, and claim your Certificate in Applied Project Management
What if I don’t finish all the courses that make up the certificate?
If you do not complete all the required courses you will not receive the U of T Certificate in Applied Project Management. You will still receive a certificate of completion for each individual course you completed, and may claim PDUs (Professional Development Units) for each of the courses you completed.
How many PDUs will I earn?
The U of T Certificate in Applied Project Management is made up of 8 courses which total 18 training days. Participants who complete the certificate earn a total of 126 PDUs. An additional 20 PDUs may be earned by completing InSite - the optional on-line training which is included as part of the PMP Exam Prep workshop. PDUs earned after achieving your PMP Designation can be applied to the 60 PDUs required for the first 3-year cycle to maintain your PMP designation. PMI allows up to 20 PDUs earned during the last year of the 3 year cycle to be applied to the next three year cycle.
